Ouachita blackberry is known for its high fruit yields, large fruit size, erect thornless canes, mid-season ripening, and good fruit quality. They can be planted in straight rows for effortless, walk through harvest in the home garden or ‘you-pick’ farms as it produces uniform canes and establishes faster than other varieties. Developed in 1990 by the University of Arkansas, Ouachita fruits begin ripening in mid-June and will continue for about 35-40 days. Fruit production is about 5-7lbs. per plant. Canes will grow to a height of 4-5 feet, like that of Navaho Blackberry and thus do not need to be staked or trellised. Fruit flavor is sweet and has the distinct aroma of blackberry. Fruit yield is considered very high for the plant’s size. Cold hardiness is to 8F degrees.
