The most distinctive features of the Navaho are its thornless canes with erect growth habit (only growing to 4-5 feet tall), late ripening, and outstanding flavor. Test plantings show this variety is hardy to -9F degrees and can flourish as far south as zone 10A (Miami, Florida). In 1977, Navaho was the first truly erect, thornless blackberry to be developed at the University of Arkansas. Fruits ripen for about 30 days starting in late June and is considered late ripening for a thornless blackberry. Fruit production per plant is 5-7 lbs. Canes do not need to be trellised. Navaho can be eaten fresh and can be used for processing, jellies, and jams.
